Work packages

The project is structured into five work packages (WPs):

Objectives:

1. To establish an efficient management structure and to monitor the overall project implementation.

2. To ensure early identification of problems, to enable timely contingency measures.

3. To monitor overall scientific quality, leading to achievement of project objectives and high-quality outcomes.

4. To ensure adequate communication flow among partners and with the EC.

5. To guarantee effective innovation management.

Tasks:

1.1 Administrative, legal and financial coordination.

1.2 Project meetings, including KoM, and internal communication.

1.3 Quality Control.

1.4 Innovation and technological management and coordination.

1.5 Project reporting.

Objectives:

1. To develop protocols for in-vitro bioactivity evaluation of irradiated egg proteins and egg protein-derived peptides.

2. To identify bioactive products from irradiation of egg protein mixtures and isolates.

3. To develop isolation procedures and methods for structural identification of egg protein-derived peptides.

4. To determine optimal irradiation conditions for the production of egg-protein fractions and peptides with antibacterial and antioxidant properties to be included in products developed in WP3.

5. To identify relationships between chemical structure of products from egg protein irradiation and their bioactivity innovation management.

Tasks:

2.1 Laboratory scale irradiation of eggshell membrane (ESM), egg white (EW) and isolated egg proteins.

2.2 Development of in vitro bioactive properties evaluation protocols and bioactivity evaluation of irradiated egg proteins and irradiation-produced peptides.

2.3 Development of isolation procedures, structural identification and quantification of target fractions and/or peptides in irradiated materials.

2.4 Development of structure-process and structure-activity database, processing conditions optimisation and irradiated materials selection.

Objectives:

1. Development of radiation-crosslinked hydrogel wound dressings with antimicrobial/antioxidant properties incorporating egg proteins, irradiated egg proteins or radiation-produced egg peptides.

2. Development of radiation-grafted food packaging films with surface enriched with antibacterial/antioxidant egg peptides.

3. Selection of two demonstrators for scale up production and product validation.

Tasks:

3.1 Laboratory scale production of egg protein/peptide containing hydrogel dressings with antimicrobial/antioxidant properties.

3.2 Laboratory scale production of active food packaging grafted with antioxidant/antibacterial egg peptides.

3.3 Selection of products and technologies for scaling-up.

Objectives:

1. Optimisation of product formulations and processing conditions to fulfil technological requirements of the selected products.

2. Production, testing and validation of trial batches of the selected product/products on a pilot scale.

3. Optimisation of EB irradiation conditions to meet peptide products and process requirements (identity, yield, purity, repeatability, etc.)

Tasks:

4.1 Scale-up of selected fractions of peptides and isolated peptides production.

4.2 Scale-up of technologies and products selected in Task 3.3.

Objectives:

1. To ensure visibility of the project and involvement of relevant stakeholders.

2. To ensure dissemination, exploitation (further development) of results.

3. To promote and ensure cross fertilization of project results.

4. To ensure wide communication of the project, promoting sensibilization of public at large on the potential of nuclear energy and its benefits.

Tasks:

5.1 Planning of the communication and dissemination activities.

5.2 Setting-up and maintenance of project website and related web-pages.

5.3 Targeted dissemination activities.

5.4 Communication activities.

5.5 Exploitation of results.
